The Virgin Of Guadalupe
title The Virgin Of Guadalupedescription California artist Jeffrey Vallance proposed to make an intervention at the Tijuana Wax Museum for inSITE2000. Collaborating with Mexico City-based wax-figure maker Victor Hugo Yanez, Vallance produced three new figures for the museum: the Virgin of Guadalupe, Dante, and former US President Richard Nixon. Vallance started with a list of about twenty-eight names of historical and contemporary figures as potential additions to the display at the museum, and arrive at the selection of the three figures based on the existing exhibition structure. The Virgin of Guadalupe could be seen in full figure situated on her own, while Nixon was placed in the presidential room holding in his hands the symbolic element that came to define his public career, a simulated set of reel-to-reel Watergate tapes, and Dante was placed at the entrance to hell with his hand pointing the way. With his project for the Wax Museum, Vallance deepened his own interest and fascination with the three selected figures. title Airplane Parts And Building, A Large Growth For San Diego: Exterior Viewdescription Commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego a few years prior to 1994, the Museum presented, in conjunction with inSITE94, a new installation by Los Angeles-based artist Nancy Rubins at their downtown location. Titled "Airplane Parts and Building, A Large Growth for San Diego," the installation was built of discarded airplane parts that were arranged to rise from the floor of the interior space of the Museum and pierce through the building's south-facing windows to form a large hovering growth on the exterior. Abandoned Ii: Aerial View
title Abandoned Ii: Aerial Viewdescription Garden and Landscape Originally created for inSITE92 by San Diego artist Michael Schnorr and Swedish artist Ulf Rollof, "Abandonado II" was renovated for inSITE94. The project was from the beginning born of the particular circumstances that describe its location. Situated on an empty lot across the street from the Pacific Ocean at Playas de Tijuana, the installation was intended to serve the numerous abandoned children who live along the border in the beach area. The installation consisted of several pieces constructed from brick and concrete, among them two pieces of fire-heated outdoor furniture, the "Fire Sofa" and "Fire Chair." It also included a shell-like echo chamber titled "Habla/Head - Cabeza/Speak" and a circle of brick school desks titled "The Bricklayers' Class." Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art For inSITE97 Rubén Ortiz Torres collaborated with Salvador "Chava" Munoz to construct "Alien Toy UCO (Unidentified Cruising Object)/La ranfla cosmica ORNI (Objeto rodante no identificado)," a lowrider car that was converted into a dancing hydraulics wonder in the form of a Border Patrol vehicle. Chava, a world champion in radical bed dancing, reworked each section of the car to move and spin on its own set of hydraulics and arms. Ortiz Torres produced a film with alien imagery and clips of the car in action to accompany the installation. Cindy Zimmerman's Community Engagement project for inSITE97 was the development of a new park environment at the landfill adjacent to Florida Canyon in Balboa Park. Constructing the piece over several months, Zimmerman involved children and families in the creation and placement of straw bales and clay in the landfill to make labyrinths, temporary earthworks, and adobe structures. "The Great Balboa Park Landfill Exposition of 1997/La gran exposicion del relleno del Balboa Park 1997" transformed an unused and unattractive plot of land into a new community park and art installation. Constructed from cardboard-covered wooden poles, the grid was built scaled to the human body to give a greater sensory impact as the viewer navigated the room. title Search: General Viewdescription Chicago-based artist Inigo Manglano-Ovalle proposed a transformation of the bullring at Playas de Tijuana for inSITE2000. Working on a scale indicative of the vast site, Manglano-Ovalle transformed the bullring into a large radio telescope searching for "aliens." Titled Search/En Busqueda the piece functioned as a listening device searching the atmosphere for any discernible noise made by aliens. A suspended antenna above a receiving dish located at ground level of the bullring would pick up sounds that in turn would be broadcast, along with the white sound of listening, on speakers surrounding the bullring, as well as on FM radio and the web. Located prominently on the plaza of the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Ramirez replicated a common Tijuana shanty house and thereby placed the issue of socio-economic disparity where it would be difficult to avoid. The artist drew a sharp contrast to that of the modern façade of the CECUT and this apparent tension was further underscored when one ventured inside the building to find the trappings of common Mexican life. The installation included documentary photographs of five similar shanty homes. title You Are Aquí: Freeway At Nightdescription Cuban-born artist Arturo Cuenca was drawn to work with the visual language of billboards that crowd the US-Mexican border crossing at San Ysidro. With "You Are Aquí" Cuenca pointed to the obvious - locating border crossers exactly at the point of transition between the two countries. Borrowing from the visual language of the surrounding billboards. Cuenca constructed a new billboard with a manipulated satellite image of the border and had it installed on the Puente Mexico, the pedestrian bridge that crosses the lines of vehicular border traffic. Project At Maclovio Rojas: Video Documentary
title Project At Maclovio Rojas: Video Documentarydescription Brazilian artist Monica Nador began her project for inSITE2000 with a two-month residency in the community of Maclovio Rojas in Tijuana. Challenging traditional notions of the role of the artist and audience, Nador worked with ten families in the community to implement a collaborative form of decoration for the exterior of their homes. Encouraging each family to identify ancestral signs, symbols, and other imagery associated with their regional and cultural heritage, Nador and a small team of assistant artists began a process of creating stencils to be used in decorating their houses. Working in the community for approximately six months, the artist's motivation that "beauty is good for mental and spiritual health" resulted in brightly painted and decorated houses that residents in the entire community saw as unifying and adding visual wealth that could be shared by all. title Toaster Work Wagon: Exhibitiondescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Kim Adam's for inSITE97, Toaster Work Wagon, was a grafting on existing nomadic street life (i.e. concession vehicles). The trailered unit, constructed from the hoods and ends of two Volkswagen vans, set out on daily wanderings around San Diego and Tijuana like a winged toaster. Popping open into a work-waiting station, the Wagon attracted crowds of children and bystanders with its unusual contents. Children's bicycles were grafted into two-headed tricycles that were left at the site for adoption. Children experimented with the bicycles, cooperating with one another to move in one direction or the other. Adam's project experimented with notions of form and function as well as movement and direction. title One Flew Over The Void (Bala Perdida): Border Fence Decorated With Banners Behind Performance Stagedescription Building on a collaborative process that is evident throughout his artistic practice, Javier Téllez's project "One Flew Over the Void (Bala perdida)" involved a sustained engagement with psychiatric patients from the Baja California Mental Health Center in Mexicali to co-create a public event and to document its evolution and final performance. Inspired by the traditional "human cannonball" circus performer, Téllez explored the notion of spatial and mental borders in the context of Tijuana and San Diego, and developed an event that involves sending a "human cannonball" across the border between Mexico and the United States. Through successive creative workshops and exchanges the world's most famous human cannonball, Dave Smith, the psychiatric patients and Téllez collectively devised the backdrop, music, costumes, and radio and television announcements for the event. The performance occurred on August 27 at the site where the Mexico/US border fence disappears into the sea between Playas de Tijuana and Border Field State Park. title Curtain Calldescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Mexico City artist Felipe Ehrenberg created a two-part installation for inSITE94, "Curtain Call," sited in the concourse of the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego and in the garden of the Centro Cultural Tijuana. The artist installed two nearly identical structures. In Tijuana, the work consisted of a metal framework of poles between which cables were stretched. Across these cables, faceless cotton cloth dolls were randomly hung like human musical notes. The Tower
title The Towerdescription Drawing on the tradition of the California Light and Space movement, San Diego-based artist Jim Skalman created an installation titled "The Tower/La Torre" for inSITE94 that joined these sensibilities in a minimal expression of calculated form, space, and light. Skalman chose to work at La Torre in Tijuana because of its architectural space, history, and the possibilities it offered. title Saline: Plexiglas Containers Filled With Waterdescription For inSITE94, artist Nina Karavasiles created "Saline/La salina" at the Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum, part of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. The artist built a salt-filled trough that extended from the aquarium-museum courtyard down the hillside towards the water, creating a visual connection to the seaside, the Scripps Pier, and the ocean beyond. Alongside the trough were Plexiglas enclosures containing salt water. For inSITE94, Mathieu Gregoire created a permanent installation for the central courtyard of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Entitled "Blue Granite Shift/Transición del granite azul," the piece is made of granite quarried from the hills surrounding the cultural complex. Extending 500 feet throughout the courtyard, the work moves from rough granite boulders to increasingly more cut and polished stones, finally ending with completely square granite elements. Likewise, the landscaping follows a similar evolution from native plants and trees to more formal and decorative varieties. The artist erected four billboards with images of the canyon spaced about one hundred yards apart. As one would approach the canyon by car the question "When is a Canyon Not a Canyon," written out over the four billboards, highlighted a development project then being considered by the Chula Vista City Council. title Yin/Yang, Us/Themdescription Albert Chong's project, "Yin/Yang, Us/Them/Yin/yang, nosotros/ellos," was installed at La Torre de Tijuana. Gathered on the floor of the Torre were apples and oranges arranged in the Taoist symbol of yin and yang. In the words of the artist, the fruits symbolize difference and co-existence. Surrounding this circle were half-shell coconuts containing water, wine, and rum. title Rain Bow: View With Blinds Opendescription San Diego Natural History Museum San Diego-based artist Roman de Salvo created four distinct installations for inSITE94 at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Titled "Rain Bow/Arco de lluvia," "Santa Ana," "Exits/Salidas," and "Mouse Hole/Ratonera," respectively, the pieces were located in areas of the museum not normally used for exhibition. Drawing attention to the marginal with a certain measure of wit, de Salvo's minimal yet rich interjections invited visitors to contemplate freely, without detailed exposition from the artist. With "Rain Bow" engaging the drinking fountain pulls a cord which opens the shutter blinds, revealing an image of a rainbow over the park directly outside the museum. title Untitled: Gold Leaf With Plumeria Bloomin In Bottom Of Abandoned Pooldescription Architecture and City Planning Centro Escolar Agua Caliente (Tijuana, Mexico) Scottish artist Anya Gallacio created two installations for inSITE94, one untitled piece located at Centro Escolar Agua Caliente, the other titled "Preserve: Maya/Preservación: maya" at the downtown location of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. Gallacio was drawn to the site of Agua Caliente because of its history: it was built in 1929 as a resort and casino for the rich who came there to escape and play. Having been abandoned for many years, the pool was showing signs of decay with missing tiles, cracks, and broken elements. Gallacio chose to cover these exposed areas with gold foil, referencing and revealing a sense of the pool's gilded past. At MCASD, Gallacio worked with the theme of natural transformation. The artist chose a space viewable from both inside the Museum and from the bookstore, and layered red gerbera daisies between two panes of glass to create a botanical stained glass that was inserted as a window space. title Animal Vegetable Mineraldescription Artists Nanette Yannuzzi Macias and Melissa Smedley collaborated on a two-part installation for inSITE94 at El Sotano (an abandoned mop factory) in Tijuana and the San Diego Natural History Museum. Entitled "Animal Vegetable Mineral: Comidas para los sombreros," the artists explained the installations as explorations of the rituals of communication. At El Sotano, the work consisted of a multitude of materials from a cotton loom, gourds, candles, and buckets, to a deerskin, bird cage, and eucalyptus tree stump, suggesting, according to the artists, a laboratory space that referenced the machine and ritual. title Signs Of Mount Signal: View Of Exhibition At Steppling Art Gallery, San Diego State University, Calexicodescription For inSITE2000 New York-based artist Allan McCollum created a multivenue project involving the participation of residents and institutions from the Imperial Valley and Valle de Mexicali region to the east of San Diego. Interested in participating in the establishment of a cultural identity and iconography for the region, McCollum was initially drawn to the area through learning about sand spikes, a unique natural geological concretion found only at the foot of Mt. Signal/El Centinela. With the mountain straddling the US-Mexico border, it was already established as a physical landmark and identifying symbol for locals on either side of the border. During extended residency periods McCollum collected artworks by local residents depicting the mountain and performed extensive research on the sand spike and Mt. Signal, as well as the local culture surrounding both. With his project Signs of Mount Signal/Signos del Cerro del centinela, McCollum brought together the work of thirty-seven local artists showcasing the mountain and forged a collaboration between four regional institutions. The project included over one thousand cast replicas of the sand spike and Mt. Signal, a 16-foot sand spike sculpture, a large-scale model of Mt. Signal, collected historical information about the area, local artwork depicting the mountain, as well as twelve booklets produced by the artist on the subject of concretions. title Dante Alighieridescription California artist Jeffrey Vallance proposed to make an intervention at the Tijuana Wax Museum for inSITE2000. Collaborating with Mexico City-based wax-figure maker Victor Hugo Yanez, Vallance produced three new figures for the museum: the Virgin of Guadalupe, Dante, and former US President Richard Nixon. Vallance started with a list of about twenty-eight names of historical and contemporary figures as potential additions to the display at the museum, and arrive at the selection of the three figures based on the existing exhibition structure. The Virgin of Guadalupe could be seen in full figure situated on her own, while Nixon was placed in the presidential room holding in his hands the symbolic element that came to define his public career, a simulated set of reel-to-reel Watergate tapes, and Dante was placed at the entrance to hell with his hand pointing the way. With his project for the Wax Museum, Vallance deepened his own interest and fascination with the three selected figures. title Minicity: General Viewdescription For inSITE97's Community Engagement Program, Amanda Farber developed "miniCITY/miniCIUDAD," an ongoing project constructed by children visiting the San Diego Children's Museum. The miniature city was pieced together from cardboard, scrap materials, and other miscellaneous craft items gathered and donated from various local stores. The open-ended structure of the project allowed children to create their own image of a city based on their personal experiences and imagination. Farber commented that she wanted the piece to focus on the children's ideas and perceptions, not a reflection of her own opinions and preconceptions. Constructing the piece over several months, Zimmerman involved children and families in the creation and placement of straw bales and clay in the landfill to make labyrinths, temporary earthworks, and adobe structures. "The Great Balboa Park Landfill Exposition of 1997/La gran exposicion del relleno del Balboa Park 1997" transformed an unused and unattractive plot of land into a new community park and art installation. title Abandoned Iidescription Garden and Landscape Originally created for inSITE92 by San Diego artist Michael Schnorr and Swedish artist Ulf Rollof, "Abandonado II" was renovated for inSITE94. The project was from the beginning born of the particular circumstances that describe its location. Situated on an empty lot across the street from the Pacific Ocean at Playas de Tijuana, the installation was intended to serve the numerous abandoned children who live along the border in the beach area. The installation consisted of several pieces constructed from brick and concrete, among them two pieces of fire-heated outdoor furniture, the "Fire Sofa" and "Fire Chair." It also included a shell-like echo chamber titled "Habla/Head - Cabeza/Speak" and a circle of brick school desks titled "The Bricklayers' Class." Yanagi's work "America" had been installed previously in variations at different institutions around the world. For this installation the artist chose to include thirty-six flags of each country of the Americas in his elaborate ant farm. title Popotla - The Wall Popotla - El Muro: Documentary Videodescription For their InSITE97 Community Engagement project, artist collective RevolcionArte (RevArte) worked with local children and residents of the fishing village Popotla to create murals constructed of found materials to soften and embellish the concrete walls surrounding their community. Popotla had recently been subjected to the development of numerous modern buildings and projects, including the kilometer-long concrete wall constructed for 20th Century Fox's production set for the film Titanic. It was on this wall that the murals were created, giving the residents a sense of ownership over their village and its landscape. Signal/El Centinela. With the mountain straddling the US-Mexico border, it was already established as a physical landmark and identifying symbol for locals on either side of the border. During extended residency periods McCollum collected artworks by local residents depicting the mountain and performed extensive research on the sand spike and Mt. Signal, as well as the local culture surrounding both. With his project Signs of Mount Signal/Signos del Cerro del centinela, McCollum brought together the work of thirty-seven local artists showcasing the mountain and forged a collaboration between four regional institutions. The project included over one thousand cast replicas of the sand spike and Mt. Signal, a 16-foot sand spike sculpture, a large-scale model of Mt. Signal, collected historical information about the area, local artwork depicting the mountain, as well as twelve booklets produced by the artist on the subject of concretions. title International Waters: Detail Of Pipe Penetrating The Border Fencedescription Architecture and City Planning Border Field State Park, San Diego, California, United States For inSITE97 San Diego artist Louis Hock constructed "International Waters/Aguas internacionales" at the Border Field State Park/Playas de Tijuana section of the border fence. Using water pumped from a well several miles northeast of the site, Hock built a double-sided drinking fountain with one head on each side of the border. People bending to drink from the heads could see each other through a hole cut in the metal fence. During the exhibition, US government authorities suddenly decided to replace the opaque metal fence with a chain link fence. Working to establish some sort of platform for communication across the fence, Allen's proposal for a public exchange of words and music evolved from two stationary free-speech areas to two mobile units. Two vans were outfitted with wooden platforms, microphones, amplifiers, and translators, one for each side of the border. The artist drew a sharp contrast to that of the modern façade of the CECUT and this apparent tension was further underscored when one ventured inside the building to find the trappings of common Mexican life. The installation included documentary photographs of five similar shanty homes. For inSITE94, Mathieu Gregoire created a permanent installation for the central courtyard of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Entitled "Blue Granite Shift/Transición del granite azul," the piece is made of granite quarried from the hills surrounding the cultural complex. Extending 500 feet throughout the courtyard, the work moves from rough granite boulders to increasingly more cut and polished stones, finally ending with completely square granite elements. Likewise, the landscaping follows a similar evolution from native plants and trees to more formal and decorative varieties. title Family Treesdescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Drawings and Watercolors Ernest Silva's inSITE97 Community Engagement project, "Family Trees/Arboles de familias," was a collaboration with artist Alberto Caro-Limón that linked the Children's Museum in San Diego to the Centro Cultural in Tijuana. Each site allowed children to write their own family stories and draw family portraits. Both installations were brightly colored and filled with images of houses, trees, birds, and birdhouses to symbolize the exchange of memories and stories from one museum to the other. The space at the Children's Museum was a Rain House that functioned as a studio, reading room, and exhibition space for the children's family projects. At the Centro, the space contained children-sized houses, benches and work spaces, and painted wood-picket fences and trees. The Line
title The Linedescription Fernando Arias's project for inSITE97, The Line/La linea, was installed at the ReinCarnation Project in downtown San Diego. Using a piece of the US-Mexico border sheet metal fence slightly suspended above a concrete floor, Arias divided an interior space. Beneath the suspended edge of the fence the artist placed white powder - an image of cocaine about to be cut. Attempting to highlight the human issues raised by illegal drug trafficking among countries of the Americas, Arias focused particularly on the use of the human body as a vehicle for transport and smuggling. The Good Rumor Project
title The Good Rumor Projectdescription "The Good Rumor Project" appropriates and replicates the model of a social experiment. In seeking to invert the more common negative effects of rumor Wrange and his collaborators constructed two "good" rumors: one about people in Tijuana that was spread in San Diego and one about people in San Diego that was spread in Tijuana. In contrast to normal rumors, the "good" rumors were created in dialogue with the actual subjects of the rumors through a series of focus groups. The "good" rumors were disseminated through a multifaceted strategy that combines some of the most advanced marketing techniques - viral/ word of mouth marketing - with structures borrowed from rumor theory as well as recent research on small-world networks and social network analysis. title Untitled: Gold Leaf With Fountain And Graffitidescription Architecture and City Planning Centro Escolar Agua Caliente (Tijuana, Mexico) Scottish artist Anya Gallacio created two installations for inSITE94, one untitled piece located at Centro Escolar Agua Caliente, the other titled "Preserve: Maya/Preservación: maya" at the downtown location of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. Gallacio was drawn to the site of Agua Caliente because of its history: it was built in 1929 as a resort and casino for the rich who came there to escape and play. Having been abandoned for many years, the pool was showing signs of decay with missing tiles, cracks, and broken elements. Gallacio chose to cover these exposed areas with gold foil, referencing and revealing a sense of the pool's gilded past. At MCASD, Gallacio worked with the theme of natural transformation. The artist chose a space viewable from both inside the Museum and from the bookstore, and layered red gerbera daisies between two panes of glass to create a botanical stained glass that was inserted as a window space. title El Niño: Proposal Drawingdescription Centro Cultural Tijuana For inSITE97 Einar and Jamex de la Torre constructed "El Niño," a monumental pyramid based on pre-Hispanic design and iconography. The vinyl and glass structure was installed in the lobby of the CECUT in Tijuana, juxtaposing the contemporary architecture of the space with the ancient motifs on the pyramid. El Nino incorporated symbolism of the demigod that is part holy child, part weather demon, with the El Sexenio, the six year presidential term that prompts cycles of havoc/progress in the Mexican economy. The interior of the pyramid was visible through glass staircases on the sides of the pyramid, revealing plaster statues of Jesus in a womblike cavern. Just yards from the border fence, one could take a ride on this circular track where a single wagon with five fir trees planted in empty oil drums went around in endless circles to a dizzying effect. Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art For inSITE97 Rubén Ortiz Torres collaborated with Salvador "Chava" Munoz to construct Alien Toy UCO (Unidentified Cruising Object)/La ranfla cosmica ORNI (Objeto rodante no identificado), a lowrider car that was converted into a dancing hydraulics wonder in the form of a Border Patrol vehicle. Chava, a world champion in radical bed dancing, reworked each section of the car to move and spin on its own set of hydraulics and arms. Ortiz Torres produced a film with alien imagery and clips of the car in action to accompany the installation. Cindy Zimmerman's Community Engagement project for inSITE97 was the development of a new park environment at the landfill adjacent to Florida Canyon in Balboa Park. Constructing the piece over several months, Zimmerman involved children and families in the creation and placement of straw bales and clay in the landfill to make labyrinths, temporary earthworks, and adobe structures. title America: Detail Of Ants Removing Sand From U.S. "Flag"description For inSITE94, Japanese artist Yukinori Yanagi contributed two distinct installations titled "Wandering Position/Vagamundos" and "America/America," which were installed at the Santa Fe Depot and the downtown space of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, respectively. Yanagi's work "America" had been installed previously in variations at different institutions around the world. For this installation the artist chose to include thirty-six flags of each country of the Americas in his elaborate ant farm. Working to establish some sort of platform for communication across the fence, Allen's proposal for a public exchange of words and music evolved from two stationary free-speech areas to two mobile units. Two vans were outfitted with wooden platforms, microphones, amplifiers, and translators, one for each side of the border. Located prominently on the plaza of the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Ramirez replicated a common Tijuana shanty house and thereby placed the issue of socio-economic disparity where it would be difficult to avoid. The artist drew a sharp contrast to that of the modern façade of the CECUT and this apparent tension was further underscored when one ventured inside the building to find the trappings of common Mexican life. The installation included documentary photographs of five similar shanty homes. The artist stated that with this work he wanted to point to one of the sore spots of Mexican society and also posit that while some people may live in poverty they live equally with dignity and pride as members of the same society. --inSITE94 [Title, Date]. title Toaster Work Wagon: Wagon Situated By U.S. - Mexico Border Fencedescription Kim Adam's for inSITE97, Toaster Work Wagon, was a grafting on existing nomadic street life (i.e. concession vehicles). The trailered unit, constructed from the hoods and ends of two Volkswagen vans, set out on daily wanderings around San Diego and Tijuana like a winged toaster. Popping open into a work-waiting station, the Wagon attracted crowds of children and bystanders with its unusual contents. Children's bicycles were grafted into two-headed tricycles that were left at the site for adoption. Children experimented with the bicycles, cooperating with one another to move in one direction or the other. Adam's project experimented with notions of form and function as well as movement and direction. title Blue Granite Shiftdescription California Center for the Arts Museum (Escondido, Calif.) For inSITE94, Mathieu Gregoire created a permanent installation for the central courtyard of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Entitled "Blue Granite Shift/Transición del granite azul," the piece is made of granite quarried from the hills surrounding the cultural complex. Extending 500 feet throughout the courtyard, the work moves from rough granite boulders to increasingly more cut and polished stones, finally ending with completely square granite elements. Likewise, the landscaping follows a similar evolution from native plants and trees to more formal and decorative varieties. Following the fourteen Stations of the Cross, the installation was built upon fourteen columns each distinguished by a word with multiple meanings spelled out in blue neon. Each column was also marked by an illuminated bronze Roman numeral as well as enigmatic figure at the top of the column, shrouded in dark wrappings. The Line
title The Linedescription Fernando Arias's project for inSITE97, The Line/La linea, was installed at the ReinCarnation Project in downtown San Diego. Using a piece of the US-Mexico border sheet metal fence slightly suspended above a concrete floor, Arias divided an interior space. Beneath the suspended edge of the fence the artist placed white powder - an image of cocaine about to be cut. Attempting to highlight the human issues raised by illegal drug trafficking among countries of the Americas, Arias focused particularly on the use of the human body as a vehicle for transport and smuggling. Gallacio was drawn to the site of Agua Caliente because of its history: it was built in 1929 as a resort and casino for the rich who came there to escape and play. Having been abandoned for many years, the pool was showing signs of decay with missing tiles, cracks, and broken elements. Gallacio chose to cover these exposed areas with gold foil, referencing and revealing a sense of the pool's gilded past. At MCASD, Gallacio worked with the theme of natural transformation. The artist chose a space viewable from both inside the Museum and from the bookstore, and layered red gerbera daisies between two panes of glass to create a botanical stained glass that was inserted as a window space. title Techno-Balero: Detail View Of Marketdescription Pasaje Gómez Market, Tijuana (Baja California, Mexico) San Diego-based artist Roman de Salvo created a project for inSITE2000 that followed his line of tongue-in-cheek works while at the same time cleverly pointing at issues of relevance and depth in contemporary culture and society. Using the balero, an iconic, inexpensive Mexican toy most often bought by tourists visiting Tijuana, de Salvo created the simulation of a high-tech video arcade game. With elements high and low coming together, de Salvo installed three "Techno-balero" stations in a typical downtown Tijuana market where one could play the baleros by manipulating a joystick that moved a mock "video" screen or, in actuality, a low-tech blinky image, showing the balero being played. title Signs Of Mount Signal: Detail Of Sand Spikes In Exhibition At The Pioneers Museumdescription For inSITE2000 New York-based artist Allan McCollum created a multivenue project involving the participation of residents and institutions from the Imperial Valley and Valle de Mexicali region to the east of San Diego. Interested in participating in the establishment of a cultural identity and iconography for the region, McCollum was initially drawn to the area through learning about sand spikes, a unique natural geological concretion found only at the foot of Mt. Signal/El Centinela. With the mountain straddling the US-Mexico border, it was already established as a physical landmark and identifying symbol for locals on either side of the border. During extended residency periods McCollum collected artworks by local residents depicting the mountain and performed extensive research on the sand spike and Mt. Signal, as well as the local culture surrounding both. With his project Signs of Mount Signal/Signos del Cerro del centinela, McCollum brought together the work of thirty-seven local artists showcasing the mountain and forged a collaboration between four regional institutions. The project included over one thousand cast replicas of the sand spike and Mt. Signal, a 16-foot sand spike sculpture, a large-scale model of Mt. Signal, collected historical information about the area, local artwork depicting the mountain, as well as twelve booklets produced by the artist on the subject of concretions. title The Good Rumor Projectdescription "The Good Rumor Project" appropriates and replicates the model of a social experiment. In seeking to invert the more common negative effects of rumor Wrange and his collaborators constructed two "good" rumors: one about people in Tijuana that was spread in San Diego and one about people in San Diego that was spread in Tijuana. In contrast to normal rumors, the "good" rumors were created in dialogue with the actual subjects of the rumors through a series of focus groups. The "good" rumors were disseminated through a multifaceted strategy that combines some of the most advanced marketing techniques - viral/ word of mouth marketing - with structures borrowed from rumor theory as well as recent research on small-world networks and social network analysis. title Abandoned Iidescription Garden and Landscape Originally created for inSITE92 by San Diego artist Michael Schnorr and Swedish artist Ulf Rollof, "Abandonado II" was renovated for inSITE94. The project was from the beginning born of the particular circumstances that describe its location. Situated on an empty lot across the street from the Pacific Ocean at Playas de Tijuana, the installation was intended to serve the numerous abandoned children who live along the border in the beach area. The installation consisted of several pieces constructed from brick and concrete, among them two pieces of fire-heated outdoor furniture, the "Fire Sofa" and "Fire Chair." It also included a shell-like echo chamber titled "Habla/Head - Cabeza/Speak" and a circle of brick school desks titled "The Bricklayers' Class." For inSITE94, Mathieu Gregoire created a permanent installation for the central courtyard of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Entitled "Blue Granite Shift/Transición del granite azul," the piece is made of granite quarried from the hills surrounding the cultural complex. Extending 500 feet throughout the courtyard, the work moves from rough granite boulders to increasingly more cut and polished stones, finally ending with completely square granite elements. Likewise, the landscaping follows a similar evolution from native plants and trees to more formal and decorative varieties. The second part was a sports event at the Lazaro Cárdenas high school in Tijuana on October 13, 2000. The core element employed in "The Rules of the Game" consists of the recreational and sports infrastructure commonly found in the border zone that separates Mexico and the United States. title Techno-Balero: Detail View Of Marketdescription Pasaje Gómez Market, Tijuana (Baja California, Mexico) San Diego-based artist Roman de Salvo created a project for inSITE2000 that followed his line of tongue-in-cheek works while at the same time cleverly pointing at issues of relevance and depth in contemporary culture and society. Using the balero, an iconic, inexpensive Mexican toy most often bought by tourists visiting Tijuana, de Salvo created the simulation of a high-tech video arcade game. With elements high and low coming together, de Salvo installed three "Techno-balero" stations in a typical downtown Tijuana market where one could play the baleros by manipulating a joystick that moved a mock "video" screen or, in actuality, a low-tech blinky image, showing the balero being played. British artist Andy Goldsworthy created a project for inSITE94 that illustrated his commitment to the use of organic material and the exploration of time as a central element within his work. Titled "Andy Goldsworthy: Two Stones/Andy Goldsworthy: dos piedras," the work was located at the San Diego Museum of Art and outside in Gold Gulch Canyon, Balboa Park. Created with two large boulders and wooden sticks covered with clay, the pieces were installed and left to dry and crack over the course of the exhibition. title Signs Of Mount Signal: View Of Exhibition At The Pioneers Museumdescription For inSITE2000 New York-based artist Allan McCollum created a multivenue project involving the participation of residents and institutions from the Imperial Valley and Valle de Mexicali region to the east of San Diego. Interested in participating in the establishment of a cultural identity and iconography for the region, McCollum was initially drawn to the area through learning about sand spikes, a unique natural geological concretion found only at the foot of Mt. Signal/El Centinela. With the mountain straddling the US-Mexico border, it was already established as a physical landmark and identifying symbol for locals on either side of the border. During extended residency periods McCollum collected artworks by local residents depicting the mountain and performed extensive research on the sand spike and Mt. Signal, as well as the local culture surrounding both. With his project "Signs of Mount Signal/Signos del Cerro del centinela," McCollum brought together the work of thirty-seven local artists showcasing the mountain and forged a collaboration between four regional institutions. The project included over one thousand cast replicas of the sand spike and Mt. Signal, a 16-foot sand spike sculpture, a large-scale model of Mt. Signal, collected historical information about the area, local artwork depicting the mountain, as well as twelve booklets produced by the artist on the subject of concretions.
