The Line
title The Linedescription Located at the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Playas de Tijuana, and at the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego, Mexico City-artist Eloy Tarcisio's project for inSITE94, "The Line/La Linea," played on the notion of the border as a line vis-a-vis the artist's introduction of parodying new lines. At the Playas de Tijuana, Tarcisio used five copper tubes cut open lengthwise and filled with traditional Mexican foods such as beans, corn, and chiles. The filling of each tube seemed to swell out of the slits and appeared as elements difficult to contain. The artist placed each tube at a different angle to the "original" line of the border, suggesting a re-examination of the demarcation between the two countries. --inSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 311, Folder 01, Item 376) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico [Title, Date]. The Loop: Map Of The World
title The Loop: Map Of The Worlddescription Centro Cultural Tijuana From June 1 to July 5, 1997, Francis Alys traveled from Tijuana to San Diego without crossing the US-Mexico border by circumnavigating the globe. His project, The Loop, took him from his starting point at the border fence in Tijuana, to the same point on the border fence in San Diego. Stopping in places such as Australia, China, and Canada, Alys documented the trip through email, journal entries, photographs, and mementos found along the way. Alys stated that his project was an investigation of the verbal, visual, and bicultural, and was to remain independent from any critical implications and conclusions beyond the physical displacement of the artist. This documentation, as well as a series of postcards created by the artist during his travels, was displayed at the CECUT during the public phase of inSITE97. --inSITE97 Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 01, Item 024) [Title, Date]. Heat Seeking: Detail Of San Diego Installation
title Heat Seeking: Detail Of San Diego Installationdescription "Heat-Seeking," the film Jordan Crandall produced for inSITE2000, made use of and mimicked surveillance technology deployed along the US-Mexico border. Exploring themes of Erotica and violence through five fantasy sequences woven into the overall structural narrative of mobility and monitoring, the film was shot on location in San Diego and Tijuana over the course of seven days in August 2000. Crandall stated that he wanted to use the language of cinema, advertising, and the "strategic seeing" of military systems to produce a film that would investigate interior and exterior borders. The piece was presented in two formats that each referenced mobility and ultimately established a reconfigured role of the viewer. Picturing Paradise: Project Documentation
title Picturing Paradise: Project Documentationdescription Border Field State Park, San Diego and Playas de Tijuana, Tijuana, BC. For inSITE2000 Brazilian artist Valeska Soares was drawn to work directly with the border fence that divides the US and Mexico. Soares wanted specifically to find a way for people on either side of the border to be able to come together around a common theme or event and in some way create an exchange, or the illusion of an exchange, across the fence. Her initial proposal was for a garden project that would require a reconfiguration of the fence, yet it proved to be impossible to obtain permission to realize this idea. Soares changed her proposal but remained faithful to her concept of creating an opening in the fence. With Picturing Paradise the artist installed two highly polished large sheets of steel directly onto a section of chain-link fence at Playas de Tijuana, back to back, and as it were, creating the illusion of an opening in the fence, except what was seen was a reflection. Each mirrored surface was inscribed with an excerpt from Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, a text that speaks of two mirror cities and what describes their shared reality. --inSITE2000 Garden and Landscape Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This video file was extracted from a DVD-R from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 257, DVD 00-44) [Title, Date]. Camouflaged to blend into the surrounding terrain the project was sited within a view of the border. The 8 x 16 foot bird blind structure housed photographs, charts, and books on the 370 bird species found at the reserve, along with binoculars and related research tools. As Dion himself said, he wanted to make a project that illustrated the complicated elements of this particular locale. title Duet: Film Still - Split Screendescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art For New York-based artist Lorna Simpson, her inSITE2000 project Duet/Dueto was the first color film she had produced. The work was envisioned as a dual projection using two projectors to create a diptych or split-screen effect where two narratives could unfold in parallel. Filmed exclusively at sites in Tijuana and San Diego, including a hospital, bar, newspaper factory, office, and a home, with the participation of eight local actors, Simpson spent four days with her crew on the film shoot. Piñatas Encantadas
title Piñatas Encantadasdescription Centro Cultural de la Raza (San Diego, Calif.) For his inSITE97 Community Engagement project, San Diego artist Roberto Salas collaborated with artists in Tijuana and San Diego as well as San Diego students to create a piñata installation at the Centro Cultural de la Raza. Salas designed the piñatas in reference to his perceptions of traditional, popular, and personal iconography and allowed the artists to incorporate their own perspectives as the piñatas were fabricated. With bold colors and unusual imagery, "Piñatas encantadas" visually reinterpreted the traditional Mexican piñata while celebrating its history and mythology. As part of the installation, the piñata blueprints were displayed and students painted a mural that echoed themes from the piñatas. --inSITE97 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 05, Item 330) [Title, Date]. The Cloud: White Balloons Suspended In The Sky
title The Cloud: White Balloons Suspended In The Skydescription New York-based Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar's project for inSITE2000 was designed as an ephemeral monument in memory of the migrants who had died during the previous ten years while trying to cross the border between Mexico and the US. Entitled La nube/The Cloud the piece centered around the ceremonial release of over one thousand white balloons. With the balloons tethered together as a large cloud positioned immediately above the border fence at Valle del Matador/Goat Canyon, not far from Playas de Tijuana, the work took the form of a ceremony that included the performance of classical pieces by Albinoni, Bach and Veracini, the reading of a poem by Tijuana poet Victor Hugo Limon, and a minute of silence. The balloons were then released from the cluster and drifted off one by one across the sky as symbols of the souls of the dead migrants. --inSITE2000 Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 06, Item 168) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico Valle del Matador/Goat Canyon [Title, Date]. After the performance, Vaisman planned to park the vehicle near the border fence at Playas de Tijuana, within sight of US Border Patrol officers, leaving it there to become a site registering local opinion. Yet given some obvious safety issues related to this proposal, the artist had to reconsider his project. With his original idea in mind Vaisman transformed one of the famous Tijuana zebra-painted mule carts into Border Patrol. With himself dressed in a Border Patrol uniform and the mule cart painted to look like an official vehicle, the Burro-Patrol was situated on a corner of Avenida Revolución for one weekend and functioned as a regular tourist photo-op station. -- inSITE2000 [Title, Date]. Lamelas then cut a small hole in the fifth wall at eye level, allowing a single shaft of light to beam through into the darkness. Viewers could approach the room from either side of the fifth wall and peer into the dark or light side of the space. title Abandoned Iidescription Garden and Landscape Originally created for inSITE92 by San Diego artist Michael Schnorr and Swedish artist Ulf Rollof, "Abandonado II" was renovated for inSITE94. The project was from the beginning born of the particular circumstances that describe its location. Situated on an empty lot across the street from the Pacific Ocean at Playas de Tijuana, the installation was intended to serve the numerous abandoned children who live along the border in the beach area. The installation consisted of several pieces constructed from brick and concrete, among them two pieces of fire-heated outdoor furniture, the "Fire Sofa" and "Fire Chair." It also included a shell-like echo chamber titled "Habla/Head - Cabeza/Speak" and a circle of brick school desks titled "The Bricklayers' Class." The installation became a gathering place for locals and a playground for children. - InSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 04, Item 305) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico [Title, Date]. The Invisible Man (My Way): Wrestlers Wrestling In Ring
title The Invisible Man (My Way): Wrestlers Wrestling In Ringdescription Conceived by Mexico City artist Carlos Amorales as a further elaboration of the identity of his wrestling character, Amorales, his project for inSITE2000, "The Invisible Man (My Way)/El hombre invisible (A mi manera)," took the form of two public and distinct wrestling performances. On Friday, January 19, 2001, two wrestlers from Holland, Amorales and Amorales, were featured in a fight against Mexican wrestling stars Satanico and Ultimo Guerrero. The match was part of the regular Friday night program at the Auditorio Municipal, Tijuana. The crowd of 3,500 was quiet with uncertainty as these two unknown Dutch lucha libre personalities walked into the ring. The uncertainty was transformed to excitement as the audience realized that the two Amoraleses were not impostors, but professional lucha libre wrestlers. By the end of the fight, the audience was divided between those screaming, "Amorales, Amorales!" and those who were faithful to the national wrestlers, evil as they might be. At 8:00 pm, on Saturday, January 20, 2001, the sequel of the Amorales wrestling match took place as the centerpiece of a black-tie dinner at the prestigious Wyndham Emerald Plaza Hotel in downtown San Diego. The fight was followed by dancing with music mixed live by Silverio. -- inSITE2000 Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 01, Item 025) Wyndam Emerald Plaza Hotel, San Diego, California, United States [Title, Date]. The Line: Detail Of Nopales Nailed To A Post And Covered With Red Paint
title The Line: Detail Of Nopales Nailed To A Post And Covered With Red Paintdescription Centro Cultural Tijuana, BC, Mexico Located at the Centro Cultural Tijuana, Playas de Tijuana, and at the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego, Mexico City-artist Eloy Tarcisio's project for inSITE94, "The Line/La Linea," played on the notion of the border as a line vis-a-vis the artist's introduction of parodying new lines. Tarcisio used five copper tubes cut open lengthwise and filled with traditional Mexican foods such as beans, corn, and chiles. The filling of each tube seemed to swell out of the slits and appeared as elements difficult to contain. The artist placed each tube at a different angle to the "original" line of the border, suggesting a re-examination of the demarcation between the two countries. --inSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 06, Item 374) [Title, Date]. title Photographsdescription Centro Cultural Tijuana For inSITE97, Ken Lum created two oversized large-scale photographs that were shown at the Centro Cultural Tijuana. The first photograph showed a young girl in San Diego talking on the phone about plans to eat either Mexican or Chinese food. The second photograph, with text from a popular Mexican children's rhyme, shows a young boy selling American soda and candy. The work suggests the blurring of cultural borders despite the adamantly divisive physical barrier. title One Flew Over The Void (Bala Perdida): Audience Awaiting Launch Of Human Cannonball David Smith Across Border Fence From Mexico Into The U.Sdescription Building on a collaborative process that is evident throughout his artistic practice, Javier Téllez's project "One Flew Over the Void (Bala perdida)" involved a sustained engagement with psychiatric patients from the Baja California Mental Health Center in Mexicali to co-create a public event and to document its evolution and final performance. Inspired by the traditional "human cannonball" circus performer, Téllez explored the notion of spatial and mental borders in the context of Tijuana and San Diego, and developed an event that involves sending a "human cannonball" across the border between Mexico and the United States. Through successive creative workshops and exchanges the world's most famous human cannonball, Dave Smith, the psychiatric patients and Téllez collectively devised the backdrop, music, costumes, and radio and television announcements for the event. The Last Dance
title The Last Dancedescription Known for his kinetic, conceptual, and highly imaginative works, New York artist Dennis Oppenheim created an installation entitled "The Last Dance/La última danza" for a gallery space at the Children's Museum of San Diego. The piece consisted of four pairs of cacti forms spinning together in a disjointed dance to a cacophony of music emitted from a number of 1940s radios, a record player, and a bass drum randomly beaten by a mechanized pedal. The seeming chaos of the disharmonious music and the spinning cacti figures - that both strive for closeness, yet at the same time present harm to each other - suggests relationship, especially between two cultures, where elements come together, sometimes clash, and always intertwine. --inSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) The New Children's Museum (American museum) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 03, Item 248) [Title, Date]. Salas designed the piñatas in reference to his perceptions of traditional, popular, and personal iconography and allowed the artists to incorporate their own perspectives as the piñatas were fabricated. With bold colors and unusual imagery, "Piñatas encantadas" visually reinterpreted the traditional Mexican piñata while celebrating its history and mythology. title Island On The Fence: Drawing: View Of Proposal Model: Floating Island With Border Fence In Backgrounddescription For inSITE97, Vito Acconci proposed to extend the existing US-Mexico border fence out into the Pacific Ocean by constructing a floating island that would move with the tides. Fabricated with sand and rocks atop a fiberglass structure, the island would have Umbrellas to provide shade and space for swimmers from either side of the border to rest. Envisioned to represent a liminal space, the island would allow people to escape the border's constraints on people's lives and movement, if only temporarily. Richard Nixon: Wax Figure Of Richard Nixon Holding Audio Tapes
title Richard Nixon: Wax Figure Of Richard Nixon Holding Audio Tapesdescription California artist Jeffrey Vallance proposed to make an intervention at the Tijuana Wax Museum for inSITE2000. Collaborating with Mexico City-based wax-figure maker Victor Hugo Yanez, Vallance produced three new figures for the museum: the Virgin of Guadalupe, Dante, and former US President Richard Nixon. Vallance started with a list of about twenty-eight names of historical and contemporary figures as potential additions to the display at the museum, and arrive at the selection of the three figures based on the existing exhibition structure. The Virgin of Guadalupe could be seen in full figure situated on her own, while Nixon was placed in the presidential room holding in his hands the symbolic element that came to define his public career, a simulated set of reel-to-reel Watergate tapes, and Dante was placed at the entrance to hell with his hand pointing the way. With his project for the Wax Museum, Vallance deepened his own interest and fascination with the three selected figures. In this way, having followed stories for years from different parts of the world detailing apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Vallance, during a residency period in San Diego, could add yet another apparition to the list - he spotted her up high on a stone column at the Courtyard by Marriott downtown hotel. -- inSITE2000 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 311, Folder 01, Item 385) Tijuana Wax Museum [Title, Date]. Lamelas then cut a small hole in the fifth wall at eye level, allowing a single shaft of light to beam through into the darkness. Viewers could approach the room from either side of the fifth wall and peer into the dark or light side of the space. - InSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 04, Item 306) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico [Title, Date]. Heat Seeking: Detail Of Cell Phones
title Heat Seeking: Detail Of Cell Phonesdescription "Heat-Seeking," the film Jordan Crandall produced for inSITE2000, made use of and mimicked surveillance technology deployed along the US-Mexico border. In Tijuana, the film could be seen on the video billboard at the Cuauhtémoc Circle where scenes would be interspersed with advertising and other public media. Mama: Border Patrol Agents
title Mama: Border Patrol Agentsdescription Brazilian and Swiss artist team Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg's inSITE2000 project, "MAMA," was based on work the artists undertook during several extended residencies in the region. Interested in investigating the issues of border security and immigration, the artists met with numerous groups, organizations, and individuals on either side of the border to collect materials. Through this process the artists narrowed their work to deal specifically with K-9 US customs officers on the one hand, and on the other, Mexican citizens trying to cross the border illegally. What interested Dias and Riedweg were the maternal relationships of the K-9 officers and how that informed the relationships they developed with their dogs and in turn the work they were performing daily. The work became an investigation of the border between private and public selves, and of the transgression and transference of private psychology on public situations. The project was shown as a video installation housed in two separate structures located in the San Ysidro pedestrian passage, Pasillo Turistico. Built to simulate the shape and size of ordinary cargo containers, one structure contained video of interviews with the customs officers and showed them interacting with their dogs. Each officer was asked to give his definition of "territory" and "authority." The other structure showed a looped video clip of illegal immigrants meeting up at night around a fire waiting for the "right" moment to jump the fence. --inSITE2000 Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art Performing Arts (including Performance Art) San Ysidro, San Diego, California, United States Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 03, Item 094) [Title, Date]. One Flew Over The Void (Bala Perdida): Human Cannonball David Smith Preparing To Be Shot From A Cannon And Across Border Fence
title One Flew Over The Void (Bala Perdida): Human Cannonball David Smith Preparing To Be Shot From A Cannon And Across Border Fencedescription Building on a collaborative process that is evident throughout his artistic practice, Javier Téllez's project "One Flew Over the Void (Bala perdida)" involved a sustained engagement with psychiatric patients from the Baja California Mental Health Center in Mexicali to co-create a public event and to document its evolution and final performance. The performance occurred on August 27 at the site where the Mexico/US border fence disappears into the sea between Playas de Tijuana and Border Field State Park. Finally, Téllez created a video documenting the process and the event. --inSite_05 Imperial Beach, San Diego, California, United States Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image was extracted from a DVD-R from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 198, DVD 01) Tijuana (Baja California, Mexico) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico [Title, Date]. Duet: Film Still
title Duet: Film Stilldescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art For New York-based artist Lorna Simpson, her inSITE2000 project Duet/Dueto was the first color film she had produced. The final film was on view at the Centro Cultural Tijuana from November 2000 through February 2001. --inSITE2000 Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This film still is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 06, Item 343) [Title, Date]. Abandoned Ii: Firesofa: Man Seated On "Firesofa"
title Abandoned Ii: Firesofa: Man Seated On "Firesofa"description Garden and Landscape Originally created for inSITE92 by San Diego artist Michael Schnorr and Swedish artist Ulf Rollof, "Abandonado II" was renovated for inSITE94. - InSITE94 Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 05, Item 332) Tijuana, Playas de, Baja California Norte, Mexico [Title, Date]. The Good Neighbor
title The Good Neighbordescription Casa de la Cultura de Tijuana Installed at the Casa de la Cultura in Tijuana, Tony Capellan's inSITE97 piece, El buen vecino/The Good Neighbor, was a symbol of the border and the consequences brought by partitioning land between two powers. The two chairs at the heads of table represented to United States and Mexican governments, and the table, covered in chili peppers, was dissected by a raucous, spinning buzz saw. Originally conceived to represent two hundred years of land treaties between the two countries, the final installation emphasized the violence and loss experienced by Mexico when the country was divested of its lands. --inSITE97 Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 03, Item 062) [Title, Date].
