Tijuana'S Most Wanted Painting / San Diego'S Most Wanted Painting: Exhibition Of Paintings At The San Diego Museum Of Art
title Tijuana'S Most Wanted Painting / San Diego'S Most Wanted Painting: Exhibition Of Paintings At The San Diego Museum Of Artdescription Centro Cultural Tijuana Drawings and Watercolors Paintings Russian artist collaborators Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid continued their "Most Wanted Paintings" series for inSITE2000, a series that employs a democratic process in creating "people's art" based on the aesthetic desires of the general population in a given area or country. As in previous versions of the series, the artists used multiple-choice survey questionnaires to discern, statistically, the personal preferences in art. The surveys were conducted in San Diego and Tijuana by graduate students from San Diego State University and from the Colegio de la Frontera Norte over the course of several weeks. The artists then used the data collected to create two paintings, San Diego's Most Wanted Painting and Tijuana's Most Wanted Painting. Heir Loom: Aerial View
title Heir Loom: Aerial Viewdescription California State University San Marcos Entitled "Heir Loom," Sand Diego artist Anne Mudge's project for inSITE94 consisted of a performance on the campus of California State University, San Marcos. In a courtyard of gridded grassy squares, the artist invited twenty participants to tell a story, to share a fragment of history specific to a person or event related to San Marcos. Within twenty grassy squares were carved body imprints, the grass and plant material removed, and each square was identified with a tile inscribed with the name of the participant as well as an acknowledgement of the person or event remembered. Each body recess filled with plant remains was lit on fire, symbolizing the cycle of life and death. The end of the project was marked by the planting of new growth with the body imprints, suggesting the start of a new story and with the trace of the memory of the event. --inSITE94 Garden and Landscape Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 310, Folder 03, Item 236) [Title, Date]. The Loop: Box Of Correspondance
title The Loop: Box Of Correspondancedescription Centro Cultural Tijuana From June 1 to July 5, 1997, Francis Alys traveled from Tijuana to San Diego without crossing the US-Mexico border by circumnavigating the globe. His project, The Loop, took him from his starting point at the border fence in Tijuana, to the same point on the border fence in San Diego. Stopping in places such as Australia, China, and Canada, Alys documented the trip through email, journal entries, photographs, and mementos found along the way. Alys stated that his project was an investigation of the verbal, visual, and bicultural, and was to remain independent from any critical implications and conclusions beyond the physical displacement of the artist. This documentation, as well as a series of postcards created by the artist during his travels, was displayed at the CECUT during the public phase of inSITE97. --inSITE97 Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 01, Item 023) [Title, Date].
