Leandro Osuna'S Grave, Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, Oceanside
title Leandro Osuna'S Grave, Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, Oceansidedescription A headstone for Leandro Osuna Sr. reads "Nov. 1848, Jan. 21 1928, Eternal rest grant unto him O' Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace." This Leandro Osuna is perhaps the son of the Leandro Osuna who fought for Mexico in the Mexican American war and died shortly after the war was lost, and grandson to Don Juan Mario Osuna, the first mayor of San Diego. Their 15,000-acre Rancho called "Valle de los Viejos" was bought by the railroad and renamed Rancho Santa Fe. Founded June 12, 1798 by Father Lasuen, then president of the California missions, and administered by Father Peyri, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is notable for its impressive architecture, a composite of Spanish, Moorish, and Mexican. Between 1798-1832 the mission became home to three thousand Luiseno Indians, who were native to the area. Secularized after Mexican independence in 1821, the land was to be returned to the Indians, however administrators gained title leaving nothing to the Luisenos. From 1847-1857 U.S. soldiers used the mission as a base. In 1850 California became part of the United States, and in 1865 Abraham Lincoln returned the mission to the Catholic Church. It was abandoned until 1892 when a group of Mexican Franciscans came. From 1892-1912, the Franciscans repaired the church and built living quarters on the foundations of the old mission (where the museum is today). Ongoing restoration includes: partial rebuilding of the quadrangle in 1949 for a college that is now a Retreat Center, excavating the soldier's barracks and Indian laundry, and preserving the exterior of the church building in 1984. Art conservation and archaeological research are ongoing. Mission San Luis Rey is located at 4050 Mission Avenue in Oceanside, and was designated California State Historical Landmark #239 in 1936. The 1815 Mission Church was designated National Historic Landmark #70000142 in 1970. Title supplied by cataloger.; Herman J. Schultheis was born in Aachen, Germany in 1900, and immigrated to the United States in the mid-1920s after obtaining a Ph.D. in mechanical and electrical engineering. He married Ethel Wisloh in 1936, and the pair moved to Los Angeles the following year. He worked in the film industry from the late 1930s to the mid-1940s, most notably on the animated features Fantasia and Pinocchio. His detailed notebook, documenting the special effects for Fantasia, is the subject of a 14-minute short-subject included on the film's DVD. In 1949, he started employment with Librascope as a patent engineer. Schultheis was an avid amateur photographer who traveled the world with his cameras. It was on one of these photographic exhibitions in 1955 that he disappeared in the jungles of Guatemala. His remains were discovered 18 months later. The digitized portion of this collection represents the images Schultheis took of Los Angeles and its surrounding communities after he relocated to the area in 1937.artist/creator Made Accessible Through A Grant From The John Randolph Haynes And Dora Haynes Foundation Schultheis, Hermansubject Cemeteries--California--Oceanside California Historical Landmarks Sepulchral Monuments--California--Oceanside Schultheis Collection Photographs Missions, Spanish--California--Oceanside Oceanside (Calif.) Grand Lady Of C.P. Named Outstanding Woman Of '63
title Grand Lady Of C.P. Named Outstanding Woman Of '63description Mary Logan Orcutt was an important fixture in the San Fernando Valley community as a leader in numerous women's clubs and charities and the founder of the Guadalupe Youth Center. She was also the wife of William Warren Orcutt, vice-president of the Union Oil Company in California, largely credited with the development of the oil industry in the Western United States through his pioneering use of geology in oil production. Together, the Orcutts were the owners of many ranches in Southern California. Mrs. Orcutt was determined that one ranch in particular, the Rancho Sombra del Roble (ranch in the shade of the Oaks), named for its signature 500-year-old oak trees, be preserved and given to her community as a park. In 1965, the city of Los Angeles named a 24-acre portion of the estate, Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 31 and shortly after, was acquired by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and preserved as a public historic park. It is now known as the Orcutt Ranch Horticultural Center Rancho Sombra del Roble. Photograph article dated January 28, 1964 partially reads, "'I bet you thought you would find me in a wheel chair,' she told a reporter recently at her 25-acre estate on Justice street. But the wife of the late William Warren Orcutt, founder of the Union Oil Co., is anything but physically or mentally dependent. On the contrary. Many persons regularly depend on her active participation in community affairs. And as a result of her current activity, the Canoga Park Chamber of Commerce honored her as the community's oustanding woman for 1963."; Photograph was also used in an article dated July 5, 1965. The caption partially reads, "Mrs. W. W. Rancho San Francisco Plaque
title Rancho San Francisco Plaquedescription Rancho San Francisco was a land grant that was deeded to Antonio del Valle on January 22, 1839, by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado, consisting of 48,612 acres. This rancho is famous for having the first documented discovery of gold in California. On March 9, 1842, a family member by the name of Francisco Lopez was pulling a few wild onions from the ground next a tree he had been napping under, and found flakes of gold clinging to the roots. This sparked a gold rush, though on a smaller scale than the more famous California Gold Rush years later, with about 2,000 people coming from the Mexican state of Sonora to mine the gold. During the Mexican-American War, Del Valle destroyed the mine in order to prevent the Americans from gaining access to it. In subsequent years, Rancho San Francisco would change hands several times, from the Del Valle family, to William Wolfskill, and then to Henry Newhall. On August 24, 1956 the adobe headquarters of Rancho San Francisco was designated California Historical Landmark # 556, and the tree where Lopez took his nap, known as the "Oak of the Golden Dreams", was registered as California Historic Landmark #168. Title supplied by cataloger. View of Rancho San Francisco historical plaque, which reads: "Approximately one-half mile south of this point was the adobe headquarters of Rancho San Francisco, originally built about 1804 as a granary of Missio´n San Fernando. The rancho was granted to Antonio del Valle in 1839. Here William Lewis Manly and John Rogers in January 1850 obtained supplies and animals with which they rescued their comrades of a California-bound gold-seeking emigrant party, then stranded and starving in Death Valley, some 250 miles northeast."artist/creator Unknownsubject Del Valle, Antonio Historic Sites--California Rancho San Francisco Newhall, Henry Plaques, Plaquettes--California Wolfskill, Williamcontributor Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) -
Rancho La Liebre, Near Fairmont
title Rancho La Liebre, Near Fairmontdescription Rancho La Liebre was a 48,800-acre rancho granted to Jose´ Mari´a Flores on April 21, 1846 by then-Governor Pi´o Pico. Flores was the commander and chief of the Mexican forces in California during the Mexican-American War. The ranch was so named because of the abundance of jackrabbits in the area ("liebre" means rabbit), and was mostly comprised of mountainous terrain. In 1855, Edward Beale purchased Rancho La Liebre from Flores for a mere three cents an acre. It was the first of the four Mexican Land Grants that Beale would acquire to create the present Tejon Ranch. It was on this property that Beale built an adobe home for his wife, which he named La Casa del Rancho La Liebre or Rancho La Liebre Adobe. The sturdy and roomy adobe served as the administrative headquarters for the nearly 270,000 acres of ranch land that expanded over both Los Angeles and Kern Counties. Beale, along with Robert S. Baker (one of the future founders of Santa Monica), ran sheep on the property with their flocks growing to over 100,000 head. The rancho is now a part of the Tejon Ranch. Title supplied by cataloger. View of a single story adobe showing a wrap-around porch, several thin posts holding up the roof, and two chimneys peeking out from it. It is unknown if this is Rancho La Liebre Adobe, built by Edward Beale in Bear Canyon; or if it is La Casa de Miguel Orti´z, located at 13980 Elizabeth Lake Road, situated on land given to him by Beale, which was part of Rancho La Liebre.artist/creator Unknownsubject Beale, Edward Adobe Houses--California Dwellings--California Flores, Jose´ Mari´A Ranches--California Rancho La Liebre (Calif.)contributor Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) -

Bobby Chacon Vs Rafael "Bazooka" Limon
title Bobby Chacon Vs Rafael "Bazooka" Limondescription Pacoima's Bobby Chacon (left) never ducked an opponent or a punch. One of the gutsiest Mexican-American champs, the junior lightweight fought the best--including Danny "Little Red" Lopez. Ruben Olivares, and Alexis Arguello; the finale of Chacon's epic four-fight set with Rafael "Bazooka" Limon (shown here during their third fight) is remembered as one of the great brawls in boxing history. Composite Of African American Firefighters
title Composite Of African American Firefightersdescription Chemical Co. No.1, later to become Hose Company No. 4, was the result of a segregation policy to keep African-American and Mexican-American officers from being in charge of white fire fighters. As a result, the fire department gathered up all the African-American and Mexican-American firefighters and formed the city's first all-black fire company - Chemical Co. No.1 at 137 S. Belmont Drive, Los Angeles, CA. Chemical Co. No. 1 closed in 1907 and Hose Company No. 4, referred to as ‘The Hill,’ went into service in the same station with the same all-Black crew. At the turn of the century as the demographics of Los Angeles were changing, it was decided to move the black firemen from Hose Co. 4 to Fire Station 30, an emerging mixed-race neighborhood. In 1924, Hose Co. 4 was closed and Engine Co. 58 opened in the same building. Title supplied by cataloger. View of a composite postcard of African American firefighters at Chemical Company No.1. The postcard shows the Champion Chemical Engine, double tank, each with a 50-gallon capacity, and 200 feet of chemical hose. Chemical Company No.1 was located at 137 S.
