title Serpent Column, Auto-Sacrifice: Column Capitals And Bases With Vertabrae And Feetdescription Casa de la Cultura de Tijuana Sculpture and Installations Special Collections & Archives, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/sca) Spring Hurlbut's work for inSITE97, "Columna serpiente, autosacrificio," was installed in the staircases of the Casa de la Cultura in Tijuana. Hurlbut designed cast-plaster Greek columns covered in coiling serpents, and column bases holding pairs of skeletal feet. Referencing symbols of victimization and bloodshed from Mexican and Greek history and mythology, Hurlbut wished to use architecture to examine the development of civilization and territories around the border. --inSITE97 This image is a scan of a 35mm color slide from the InSite Archive (MSS 707, Box 309, Folder 06, Item 159) [Title, Date].
