With her project for inSITE94, San Diego artist Jean Lowe created an installation that mirrored much of her previous work as a cunning commentary on an issue relevant to the current times. At the Casa de la Cultura Municipal in Tijuana, Lowe chose to rework the interior of one classroom. Entitled A Lesson in Civics/Una lección de civismo, the classroom was richly outfitted with elements such as school desks, books, educational charts, and posters created by the artist in painted papier-mache that distinctly referenced the topic of civics and how we learn to relate to other species. As the artist herself said about the work, she wanted to create an environment that encouraged a rethinking of the already known. -MKK
