Annotation
This illustration depicts a black mustang horse rearing up, with a flying airplane above it, and a landscape in the background. Black and white are the primary colors to represent the horse and the landscape, with a tint of aqua as the sky. Showcasing a point of view from below, the illustration shows movement and volume by having the muscular horse rearing up to convey strength and a wild spirit, and its large position simulates power. The lines and highlights on the horse bring out the muscular features of the body, making it appear brave, heroic, and courageous, even defensive. This lithograph serves as a graphic illustration for what would become the Blue Mustang sculpture, now located at the entrance of the Denver International Airport. The print is a powerful image that invokes the American West and the iconic history behind the vaquero (cowboy) and its relation to Mexican Americans. It also symbolizes built-up resentment and anger from Chicanos whose land has been taken from them by an oppressive dominant culture, feelings the artist might be portraying through a Neo-Pop Art sculpture of a mustang horse with an aggressive demeanor.
