Annotation
This painting is part of Linda Vallejo's Los Cielos series (1980-1990). Devoting nearly a year to each piece, the artist developed an intimate relationship with the canvas using almost 100 layers of paint, and at times using her own hands to blend colors. The intimacy of her artistic process affords this painting an immense depth of color, subject, and feeling. Inspired by the Standing Rock formations deep within Navajo reservations of Arizona, Vallejo depicts the rock formation as a giant sky spirit, Father Sky. On the right, hands reach up towards the sky, yet they are still dwarfed by the immensity of the giant. The work inspires a sense of awe that only the sheer vastness of nature can produce.
