Annotation
This screen print on paper has two big coyotes surrounded by icons. This piece is primarily two colors, red and cyan, with the addition of black symbols and white lines. Michael Menchaca has created their own codex to tell a story about the dangers of migration. The artist reclaims Mexican indigenous iconography and glyphs to illustrate Chicanx daily suffering. With visual references to codex styles of representation, this piece relates immigrant suffering as they reach “el otro lado.” Hungry coyotes kill and consume migrant cats, a familiar motif in Menchaca’s prints.
