Looking at this screen print, the main symbols that are apparent are the “x” and “o” associated with a tic-tac-toe game. The lines of this children’s game are formed by red barbed wire, bullet shells form the “x” marks, and the logo of the United States Supreme Court forms “o” marks, suggesting a more serious battle. However, there is an additional player here as indicated by brown paint strokes on the empty spaces. The use of brown color, the title, the bullet shells, and seal from the highest court in the nation suggests a battleground for Chicano/as or a cultural struggle between the United States and those who have immigrated from Mexico. Since the game is in progress and each side is one move away from winning, it is undetermined who will win without knowing who will make the final move. (Author: Ivan Garcia)
