Title
Calavera Virgin Mary And Child
Creator
Description
Cat.3 083(6)
From El Día de los Muertos Exhibition, curated by René Yáñez and Ralph Maradiaga. This black and white work could be a drawing in pencil, pen, or charcoal, or could be a painting in oil pastels or paint. It features a calavera with the attributes of La Virgen de Guadalupe: hands folded, head cocked to the side (although to the right), the moon at her feet, and an angel beneath her, (the angel's face is also a skull). She is backed by a cross. The left side of the cross has a cow skull, the right has a pyramid with an eye in the center. The eye emits a beam that has broken one corner of the crescent moon at la Virgen's feet. The upper portion of the cross bears a banner with the word "Tonantzín" (Nahuatl="our mother"), the pre-conquest designation for the goddess Coatlicue. The entire image is set within an arch that is part of an architectural structure, possibly a castle. In the upper corners outside the arch are different phases of the moon.
