Eloy Torrez created this mural to visualize the Statue of Liberty as an indigenous woman, illustrating the complexities of the artist’s European and Indigenous heritage. Using the device of symbolism, the composition is filled with numerous allegorical references: red to convey power and the importance of women, the neoclassical sculpture of Lady Liberty to suggest commitment and stability, the visual cues to Our Lady of Guadalupe to signal both Catholicism and Indigenous heritage, and the heavenly view of earth to indicate global connections. In portraying a strong woman, Torrez was also thinking of his own mother and wife at the time, Margaret. Additional autobiographical influences are the clouds and the background, which reference New Mexico, where Torrez was born, and the colorful sky represents California, where he has lived since attending school.
